How to effective to measuring LED lamp Start, Run up time and Flicker


Due to the LED solid-state lighting products have good luminous efficiency, long life and high reliability unique characteristics, so it's became more popular by markets and customers. But at the same time, the LED solid lighting have fast response characteristics, it haven’t thermal inertia and afterglow effects, like traditional lamps, so it have big influence by current fluctuations, the current fluctuations affect the luminous flux output directly, the lighting flashing is the external expression of luminous flux change, that caused more and more people focus on lighting flashing issue. Dated 14th December, 2012, the EU officially released the (EU) NO 1194/2012 rules <Implementing rules of the European Parliament and the EU Council Directive 2009/125/EC on the eco-design requirements of directional lights, LED lights and related equipment requirements>.Compared with <European Parliament and Council Directive 2005/32/EC implementing rules for non-directional household lamps eco-design requirements> which posted by the European Commission Regulation (EC) NO 244/2009 Regulations dated 18th March, 2009, the new rules have complete mandatory and eco-design requirements. Start and Run-up time as the two indicators functional requirements in the industry has been more emphasis by manufacturers.

We just talked about the LED solid lighting product's flicker effect, many people have no idea about this. The light source flashing is directly expression of luminous flux fluctuation, the light source is driving by AC current and pulsed DC current, luminous flux, illuminance or brightness change accordingly with the current amplitude of cyclical change. Normally, according to human eyes feeling, the flicker divided into Visiable Flicker and Invisible Flicker. When the frequency more than 100Hz, the human eyes can’t feeling the flicker, but it will cause eyestrain, headache etc, this is the flash effect, generally agreed that the flicker effect exists within 500Hz. For this issue, America Energy Star(ENERGY STAR lamps V1.0 draft 4 In the dimming performance requirements specified in the blink Conditions to be fulfilled, use all tools). As below figure:



Light source flashing allowed range:

1、Frequency less than 100Hz;
2、Within 120Hz-800Hz frequency range, the F1<0.001 X frequency;
3、Frequency more than 800Hz, F1 have no requirements;
4、Frequency is uncertain, PF<30%;
Besides, the CFL lamp output frequency range should at 20-30KHz, or more than 40KHz.

The nature of light source flicker is luminous flux output fluctuations. When measuring light fluctuates with time change, not only the brightness curve can be tested, but also can test luminous flux curve or illumination curve which are under the same conditions. ENERGY STAR(V1.0)make the rules to measuring flicker’s requirements:

1、Power and instrumentation are need meet the requirements of LM-79-08;
2、Multi-channel oscilloscope with memory function, necessary need to add attenuation probe. The sampling rate is more than 2kHz, the sampling time is more than 100ms;
3、Photo detector V(入) Correction, and need meet the requirements of the corresponding time;
4、For the absolute value of the metering(absolute photometry): Need use integrating sphere when measuring of the absolute value; For relative value metering(relative photometry): To ensure that the detector is capable of measuring the relative light output, and only receives light from the light source to be measured;

Before measuring, the CFL lamps need light on 100 hours at least and it’s need preheat before testing. LED lamp needn’t lighting on, the environmental temperature range should at 25+/-5 degrees.

To meet EU ErP rules and Energy Star requirements, Lisun developed LSRF-2 Lamp Start, Run-up time and Flicker Test System. Similarities and Differences between Photometric Measurements of Goniophotometer and Integrating Sphere for Solid State Lighting Products


According to the requirements of the LM-79 optical testing standards applicable to the widest range in the world, although there are many photometric measurements for light sources and lamps are available, but these standards are dedicated to the measurements for light sources and lamps. Because the form of current SSL products are lamps or luminaires, and LED in the luminaires is not easy to be replaced or separated, the existing standards cannot be directly applicable to SSL products, which requires the use of absolute photometry measurements. The photometric information required for SSL products is usually the total luminous flux (lm), luminous efficiency (lm/W), luminous intensity (Candela) in one or more directions, chromaticity coordinates, correlated color temperature and color rendering index.

There are two kinds of photometric measurement methods in LM-79: integrating sphere + spectroradiometer (or photometer); goniophotometer. Each of these two test systems has its own advantages and disadvantages. For different SSL (solid state lighting products), users can make their own choice. Two test methods for environmental temperature, air flow, power supply have specific requirements, please refer to the contents of LM-79 2.0~8.0.

For Integrating Sphere System:

Integrating sphere system is suitable for integrating LED lamps and relatively small LED light sources to measure total luminous flux and colorimetric parameters. Integrating sphere system has the advantages of fast measuring speed and no need darkroom.

The air flow inside the sphere can reach the minimum, and the temperature inside the sphere is not easily affected by the potential airflow in the temperature control room. However, the test temperature in the integrating sphere still needs to meet the requirements of temperature in LM-79 2.0~8.0. Lisun recommends using IS-XXMT series constant temperature integrating sphere to control the test temperature to 25°inside the sphere.

There are two use ways of integrating sphere, one is V(λ) corrected photometric detector, and the other is spectrum analyzer. Because the integral sphere photometer has V(λ) spectral response deviation, the first method will produce spectral mismatch error, and the second method has no spectral mismatch error theoretically. So now most of the widest spectrum system use spectroscopy measurement in the market, and Lisun recommends LMS-9000B using spectroscopy with spectrophotometric method modified after years of research and development, and if equipped with IS-XXMT constant temperature integrating sphere, it can guarantee the test precision.



When choosing the size of integrating sphere, it needs to take into account the power and shell size of SSL products. In general, for compact lamps, 1m integrating sphere can be chosen. But if the lamp power is more than 500W, 2m integrating sphere may be suitable.

In the choice of integral ball size, while taking into account the needs of power and shell size of SSL products, usually for compact lamps can choose integral ball 1 meter, and when the lamp power is more than 500W need to consider the use of integral ball 2 meters. At the same time, if using 4π test mode, the surface area of tested lamp needs to be less than 2% of the area of sphere reflective coating, such as for a 2m integrating sphere, it can only be used to test lamps no more than 30CM in length. When testing the lamp tube or the strip lamp, the length of the lamp cannot exceed 2/3 of the diameter of the integrating sphere

There is another very important step in the use of integrating sphere spectroradiometer system, that is, the self absorption correction. The response of the sphere system changes due to the absorption of light by the luminaire inside the sphere, and the error may occur when the size and shape of the light source are not consistent with the standard light source.

Self absorption correction is critical because the physical size and shape of the SSL product are usually different from the size and shape of the standard lamp. If the self absorption correction is not carried out, the lumen test results will be low.



According to the introduction we find that integrating sphere + spectroradiometer test system can carry the test in a very short time, and do not needs the darkroom, through integrating sphere diffuse reflection, the system can test the total luminous flux of lamps in all directions. But they also have some disadvantages: size of test luminaire should be small, the test result is affected by the standard lamp, and the test procedure is complicated (need to use the auxiliary lamp for self absorption correction), also it needs frequent calibration.

LISUN recommends that users use LPCE-2 (LMS-9000B) spectroradiometer integrating sphere system for testing light and compact lamps. Also after years of development, LPCE-2 system can carry the test automatically, and all parameters can be read via software. With the standard lamp calibrated by LISUN standard laboratory, the test accuracy can be guaranteed.

For Goniophotometer System:

The most important function of the goniophotometer is to test the intensity distribution and to export the IES/LDT file of SSL products, but the lumen parameters of the measured sample can also be obtained by calculation.According to the requirements of LM-79, only vertical goniophotometer with rotating mirror and rotating detector is in compliance with test requirements (e.g. LISUN LSG-3000/5000)



Other types of goniophotometer due to causes a change in the working position of the lamp, generally used in the laboratory is not recommended, but LISUN Rotary Center Goniophotometer LSG-1700B/1800B Series, through the use of high precision constant temperature detector and custom software, can greatly weaken the error.



There are two most obvious advantages of using goniophotometer for photometric measurement:

1.Its test result is absolute value, rather than with the integrating sphere system need contrast conversion by standard lamp. If it is used to test the large lamp, the accuracy will be greatly improved, and there is no need to use additional auxiliary lamp to do self absorption calibration.

2.All optical parameters can be measured by adding spectroradiometer and corresponding detector in the darkroom. And the test data is the parameters of each angle in the space, more convincing.

But in order to realize the multi-function and high-precision measurement, the use of goniophotometer also has many limitations:

1.According to the standard requirements, the distance between the detector and the measured lamp must be at least 5 times of the length of the longest axis of the measured lamp. For the tested lamp with light beam angle, the required length will be longer. For example, if you need to test a 1m lamp, then the length of the darkroom light path needs at least 5 meters, plus the equipment itself rotating and placing position, the overall length of the darkroom needs to reach about 8 meters.

2.Darkroom needs to be brushed using non-reflective black material, any reflective position may have an impact on the test results.

3.It takes longer time (longer testing time than the integrating sphere system) to complete the test.

According to the above description we can see that although the integrating sphere has the advantages of high testing speed, low environmental requirements, but the use of the goniophotometer system, especially goniophotometer system with the photometric detector and spectroradiometer can test all parameters of the SSL products, and also can export the IES/LDT file for the lighting design.

After years of experience and design, LISUN recommends users to test the bulb lamp, T5/T8 lamp, light source, small chip integrated lamps with spectroradiometer + integrating sphere test system (LPCE-2), and to test large lamp, street lamp, HID lamp with goniophotometer system (LSG-5000CCD/LSG-1800BCCD).

Energy Star certification (Energy Star certification) is a certification which can adapt to the requirements of the United States Energy Department. In addition to UL, FCC certification, it is the most popular certification of lighting products to enter the United States market,. UL reflects the goods safety performance, FCC reflects the electromagnetic compatibility of products, while the Star Energy certification reflects the goods energy saving performance of the products. Especially for the current global energy shortage, the United States energy Department has promulgated a series of energy saving plan, and the promotion of energy saving products is the main activity.



Dated on October 2015, the United States on the market with a total 2995 bulb lamp products obtain the United States Energy Star certification, mainly used to replace the 25W, 40W, 60W and 100 watt ordinary lighting with incandescent, which won the 1563 kinds of LED bulb , LED ball was certificated in more than 190 companies.
The product size of the LED bulb is generally A19, A21 and A15 (A). The shape of the bubble is spherical, and the size of the bubble is 19*1/8. LED bulb lamp for E26, E26d, E12 and GU24.

The LED ball is licensed for 2 years, the time is short for years, most of the product warranty time is 3-5 years, and more than 10 years, and even individual enterprise warranty period is 15 years.

Equivalent Test Between Normal & High Frequency Fluorescent Lamp and LED Tube

Equivalent Test Between Normal & High Frequency Fluorescent Lamp and LED Tube


Comparing with traditional fluorescent lamp, the LED tube have high light effects, low power consume, long life time and stable luminous efficiency advantages etc. At the same time, for the LED tube performance testing is became more simple, in recent years more and more customers has chosen the LED tube to replace fluorescent lamp.

Due to the main lighting products are consist of traditional fluorescent lamp, like the CFL and fluorescent lamp are still occupy a large part of market, it's impossible to replace all of them immediately, specially at the business centre and market still have many fluorescent lamps and compacted lighting products; if replace all fluorescent lamp to LED tube, it's need lots of tome and huge cost, the most important is this way can't be approved. In order to make replacement work more effective, the IEC issued the IEC62776 standard dated December of 2014, this standard explain how to do equivalent test between normal & high frequency fluorescent lamp and LED tube. Before large scale replace fluorescent lamp to LED tube, we have to make sure the LED tube whether can turn on and meet lighting demand, the lighting demand have two points: the first is require the LED tube have lower power consume than fluorescent lamp; the second is based on consume same power, the LED tube have to higher light effects than fluorescent lamp, so we will discuss the comparison test between fluorescent lamp and LED tube. The below is IEC62776 standard and equivalent test explanation:

The IEC62776 standard from chapter 1 to chapter 3.2 are mentioned the LED tube can replace the double-capped fluorescent and how to use G5 and G13 lamp holder fluorescent lamp turn to LED tube, this kind of equivalent replacement needn't LED tube to do any change, this standard only talk about G5 and G13 lamp holder of LED tube(1 Scope). At the same time, this standard also mentioned the IEC60081 double-capped fluorescent lamp performance test and LED tube suitable replace fluorescent lamp with integrated magnetic ballasts. How to do equivalent test between LED tube and fluorescent lamp, there will be use a high frequency power supply and high frequency adjustable reference ballast. As we knew the fluorescent lamp is consist of fluorescent capillary, electrical ballast and fixture, the IEC60081 and IEC60901 both standards have clear explanation for how to testing fluorescent capillary. The testing process is connect RB-3 with double-capped of fluorescent capillary, also we need connect HFP-800 high frequency power with double-capped of fluorescent capillary, some of fluorescent capillary need to do preheating process according to IEC standard's requirement, as below picture. At the same time, the relevant parameters need set up according to IEC standard’s requirement.

For the equivalent test between fluorescent lamp and LED tube, actually, it's take away the fluorescent capillary and connect LED tube(included driver) with EB, it's have necessary to explain the working principle of EB and driver: the EB is AC to AC model, when turn on the fluorescent lamp, there have a AC model high voltage to electric shock fluorescent capillary for lighting lamp, then the EB will output constant AC voltage to maintain the fluorescent lamp is always lighting on; the LED driver is AC to DC model, there have a DC power to lighting on singled LED or LED luminaires. So there use a LED tube(included driver) connect with EB which also keep AC to AC model, the equivalent test have three purposes: One is lighting on LED tube; Second is see whether the power consume of LED tube is lower than fluorescent lamp or not; third is light effect of LED tube is higher than fluorescent lamp(this will be judge by spectrometer & integrating sphere system). If need use best fair way to assess these three purpose, the EB is important, we can't use any of EB to do this kind of equivalent test, this EB must be mentioned or recommend by IEC or other standards, to solve this issue, Shanghai Lisun Electronic office developed HFP-800 High Frequency Power Supply and RB-3 High Frequency Adjustable Reference Ballast, both device are fully meet IEC60081 IEC60901 and ANSI C78.81 & C82.11standards. As we know the reference ballast is special designed for select reference light(fluorescent capillary), the characteristics of reference ballast have constant voltage and current ratio based on rated frequency, and it couldn't have any affected by voltage, temperature and ambient changes. The RB-3 is application with no sense of resistance ballast, the HFP-800 provide high frequency reference ballast with pure and high frequency power supply. The HFP-800+RB-3 system not only can to do T5/T8 fluorescent lamp test, but also can to do LED tube equivalent test.

Finally, we can see the difference of fluorescent lamp test and LED tube equivalent test. According to standard’s requirement, for the fluorescent lamp test, there must use relevant device, set up preheat current and preheat time to lighting on fluorescent lamp(As picture 1 show). Due to LED tube is special, when to do connection, we needn't this device(As picture 2 show):

The quality of LED should be tested by measuring its photometric parameters, color parameters and electrical parameters. The LPCE-3 system fully meets the standard requirements such as CIE127-1997, IES LM-79-08 and IES LM-80-08. The integral ball is produced by one molding technology, and a cross laser device and an auxiliary lamp device used to correct the measured lamp are used to improve the test accuracy.

OLED two major application markets is for display and lighting, which is to show the development of the application is more rapid. Today, display technology of OLED need to overcome some challenges to have a real impact on the market. First of all, the OLED display manufacturing process is not yet matured, large size screen is difficult to mass production. With the increase of the size of the OLED display, the loss of the finished product rate and the loss of the manufacturing are also increasing. Secondly, the service life of OLED display material still needs to be further improved.

According to the drive mode classification, the OLED device can be divided into passive drive (also known as passive drive, PM-OLED) and active drive (also known as active drive, AM-OLED). PM-OLED device does not use thin film transistor (TFT), generally applied to small and medium size display. AM-OLED device is suitable for large size display, especially for large size full color dynamic image display. Compared with PM-OLED, the new display which we say is usually AM-OLED, which has the characteristics of fast response speed, wide angle of view, and has more application fields. Compared to the traditional TFT-LCD LCD panel, the AM-OLED panel has many advantages, such as thin body, high contrast, rich color, high resolution, wide visual angle, low power consumption and so on. In addition, because the OLED panel has no liquid molecules, the seismic performance is better, low temperature resistance, strong and durable. At the same time, compared with millisecond response TFT-LCD panel, AM-OLED panel response time is its thousands of tailing and dynamic picture jitter problem does not appear to. Therefore, AM-OLED has been the industry consensus as a new type of flat panel display technology". At present, the application of the small and medium size AM-OLED panels in the high-end mobile phone is a foregone conclusion, but it is not enough to produce a revolution in the large size TV.

Generally speaking, OLED manufacturing equipment mainly include: organic vapor plating and packaging of the passive organic light emitting display (PM-OLED) with key equipment, sputtering, plasma enhanced chemical vapor phase deposition (PECVD) system, vacuum thermal evaporation system (VTE) etc. AM-OLED has thin film transistor (TFT) thin film deposition apparatus, coating machine, exposure machine, dry and wet etching machine etc. AM-OLED TFT graphics making equipment, annealing furnace, annealing gas pipeline, laser annealing equipment of AM-OLED with TFT annealing equipment, TFT electrical test equipment, OLED optical test equipments AM-OLED test equipment, laser repair machine AM-OLED with defect detection and repair equipment etc..

2011 OLED technology progress rapidly, and in 2012 will be AM-OLED production technology has reached the mature and applied to large-scale panel production began. Over the next ten years, OLED technology will continue to flourish, especially in organic light emitting materials, organic coating material, circuit drive way and encapsulation technology has pretty good progress. Although the current OLED maximum production of glass substrate for 5.5 generations, but the 5.5 generation of the production cost structure is not clear. With the gradual maturity of AM-OLED technology, AM-OLED panel manufacturers will begin to import production in large size applications.
